Recycling company: Renewi
We interviewed an employee of a company called “Renewi”, which is a recycling company that tries to give everything a second life and also collects all the residual waste and all of the paper of the school. To interview the employee we filled in a form on the site of the company in which you had to fill in your name, phone number, your question etc. we asked what happens with all of the residual waste and paper after it gets collected at school. After a few days we got a response from Pieter van der Linden, who works for customer service at Renewi. He wrote that they try to recycle most of the waste, for instance about 75% of all the paper gets recycled again. To recycle the paper they first dissolve the paper in water so that it falls apart. After that they use several sieving techniques to get all of the things like staples out. For the residual waste they try to separate and recycle (he didn’t mention how they do that) most of the waste and everything that they can’t separate or recycle they use as fuel to create renewable energy. It was not possible to visit the company, because of the Coronavirus, but they were kind enough to let us do the interview via email.
Interviews
For the 10 students that we had to interview we made a questionnaire, which included these questions:
Do you think our school is clean enough? Do you think waste is a problem at our school? How do you think pupils and teachers can reduce the amount of waste produced? Do you separate garbage at home? (If the previous answer was yes) In what categories do you separate your waste? (If the previous answer was no) Why don’t you separate your waste? If you see garbage laying on the ground somewhere, do you throw it in a bin? Do you often throw garbage on the ground instead of throwing it in a garbage can? Do you think that there are enough bins in the school? What can students do to make the school cleaner?
Most of the students we interviewed think our school is quite clean as it is now. However, they do think there could be more places to throw away your garbage, because at this moment most of the bins are in the cafeteria and classrooms. It would be useful to place bins in the hallways and place separate bins for separate types of garbage. They also think we should start using less paper, as a huge part of the waste we produce at school is paper based. They suggest writing notes on for example their mobile phones. All the students separate garbage at home, which is splendid news. The categories that the garbage was separated into most often were: plastic, paper and glass. And if the pupils we interviewed saw garbage on the ground all except two would pick it up. The two wouldn't said that if there wasn’t a bin nearby they would leave it on the ground.

As you can see, a lot of people cycle to school. There's a lot of space in front of the building to park your bike, as well as behind it. Almost all of the spaces are always occupied! |
